At our modern new laboratory outside Cape Town, ALBA Laboratories specialises in developing plant tissue cultures that meet the highest international standards of excellence.
ALBA was launched in 2000 by Dr. Ir. Michiel van Asch. A graduate of the Agricultural University Wageningen, the Netherlands, and the University of Natal, South Africa, he has gained over 10 years' extensive experience in plant tissue culture and management, most of it at the Preesman B.V. laboratory in Holland.
Our specialist knowledge and uncompromising attitude towards quality and service has poised ALBA to become the partner of choice of leading growers and discerning breeders worldwide.
Our quality control procedures are rigorously monitored and we conduct intensive staff training programmes on topics ranging from the importance of industrial hygiene to the specific cutting techniques applied to a wide variety of crops.
Carefully selected international partners for handling and transportation play a major role in our ability to deliver on our promises, as does our easy access to a sophisticated infrastructure. What's more, our proximity to Cape Town International Airport ensures fast and secure door-to-door delivery all over the globe.
Our laboratory's present capacity for 4 million plants per annum will be expanded to 10 million per annum by the end of 2003.
All processes in the laboratory are written down in protocols, which are kept to the letter, in compliance with the procedures for ISO-9001 accreditation.

Sidmar Disas is the trade name for Disa cultivars bred by Sid and Marlene Cywes of Cape Town, South Africa.
Since the early eighties, Sid and Marlene have been working on the genus Disa, improving flower shape, size and position. This has resulted in a series of Disa hybrids, which were awarded at various international exhibitions.
ALBA laboratory is very pleased to announce a close co-operation with Sidmar Disas in commercialising this unique orchid. From the end of 2003 we will have large volumes of selected cut flower hybrid available using tissue culture techniques. We believe that with modern cultivation techniques and the current knowledge about the plant requirements, any dedicated grower will be able to grow these plants to their full potential. This means that the market potential for this exclusive flower can be developed.
The first commercial cultivation of the famous Sidmar Disas in South Africa is expected to produce flowers late 2003.
For the coming growing season (2004) we have plant material available of the following cut flower cultivars:
