Plant Material for Sale

As most of our products are exclusively produced for the owners of the plant material, there are only a few products commercially available at our laboratories. Please find those below:

Ornithogalum ‘Pella’s Pride’

The cultivation of this beautiful flower started as a community project for the village of Pella. We find the flowers to be very long lasting in the vase, with the petals drying but remaining white on the flower head. When properly cultivated the flower stems can reach about 80cm to 1 metre without becoming thin and wobbly (only available as flowering size bulbs).

Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

In 2005 we were approached by a grower to “attempt” the production of tea tree plant material in tissue culture as the success rate of his tea tree cuttings was less than 30%. There was also interest to start a community project with this crop to uplift a relatively poor village of Mamre in the Western Cape. None of these projects has materialised so far, but on the positive side, we are able to deliver any amount of Tea trees at anybody’s request (available as hardened-off plant material).

Disa orchid hybrids

Since the early eighties local breeders have been working on the genus Disa, improving flower-shape, -size and -position. This has resulted in a series of Disa hybrids, which were awarded at various international exhibitions.

We have a large selection of Disas in tissue culture at ALBA laboratories and this material is available in commercial amounts of 4.000 plants or more (available either as hardened-off plant material or as ex-flask plants). We normally do not deliver plant material in the flask.

Giant bamboo (discontinued)

Since 2005 we have been involved in various projects that deal with the establishment of Giant Bamboo at a commercial scale. We were approached by one of the many companies that see bamboo to be the tool for uplifting rural communities all over the African continent. The global problems of CO2 emission that is warming up the earth’s atmosphere at an alarming rate can be balanced by planting trees.

Giant bamboo is a non-invasive grass that can reach on average 15-20 metres in height. Until recently no commercial plant material of giant bamboo was available locally and all plant material needed to be imported. At ALBA laboratories we invested in Research and Development to establish a protocol for the propagation of several giant bamboo species. Currently small trials are being performed with plant material that is of 100% African origin and plant material of Dendrocalamus asper is available commercially (only available as hardened-off plant material).
